How to Multiply Two Columns in Notion
Multiplying two columns in Notion is a nifty feature you can use for any template in the tool. Most would think that adding a multiplication formula in Notion is challenging.
But it’s pretty simple.
You can use this formula for invoice templates, budget templates, or even creating an automated grocery list.
You only have to have a database (can be new or existing) added to your workspace. From there, do the following steps.
1. Add a multiplier property to the database.
This first property serves as the first number (multiplier) in the “multiplication sentence.”
If you’re starting a new database, you can change the property type to “Number.” Do this by clicking the header name.
Then on the “Edit property” panel, click “Type” and select “Number.” You can then rename this property if you want.
You can also assign this property as a currency property in the “Number format” section. Then choose the currency to be used for that property.
Once done, exit the “Edit property” panel by clicking the “Close” button. You should now see the new header name and property type.
2. Add a multiplicand property to the database.
This will serve as the second number in the “multiplication sentence” we’re creating.
Add this property by clicking “+” after the multiplier property you created earlier.
Then select “Type” on the “Edit Property” panel before clicking “Number.” Select the same option for the “Number format” section.
Then click “Close” to exit the “Edit Property” panel.
3. Add a formula property to the database.
This property is where the product of the multiplier and multiplicand properties will appear.
Simply click the “+” button after the last property on the database. Then select “Formula.”
Then select “Edit” in the “Formula” section to type the formula for multiplying the two columns, which is:
multiply(prop(“Name of Property #1”), (“Name of Property #2”))
You can also select the name of the properties you want to multiply from the “Properties” pane of the “Notion Formula” window.
4. Click the “Done” button.
This button will turn blue if you have entered the correct formula.
5. Select “Close.”
This closes the “Edit property” pane.
You should now see the new formula property in the database.
Then all you have left to do is type the numbers in their respective properties. The formula previously added automatically calculates the product from the two properties.
If you want, you can also sum the values in the “Product” column to make the calculation process automated.
