Adding a table of contents to your Notion page keeps your documents organized. All the topics are listed in a way that you can skip reading to the answer directly!
But to add a table of contents, learn the basic steps first, which are explained here.
Table of Contents
How to Add Table of Contents in Notion (Desktop)
The table of contents feature in Notion is incredibly nifty when working with long-form content. Granting that you have already opened the page where the content is, follow these steps.
1. Structure the section titles of the content as a heading block.
Structuring the section titles as header blocks makes it easier for Notion to structure the table of contents it will create.
To do this, drag the cursor over the text before clicking the “Text” tab on the floating menu. Then choose between “H1,” “H2,” and “H3.”
2. Add the “Table of Contents” block.
There are 2 ways to add this table of contents in Notion. One way is to click the “+” button and click “Table of contents” under “Advanced Blocks”
A shorter way to do this is to type the “/” command and select the “Table of Contents” option. Type “/tableof” or “/tableofcontents” on a blank space before clicking “Table of Contents.”
By now, a table of contents block appears on the Notion page.
3. Drag the 6-dot handle to reposition the table of contents.
This is an optional step if you want to put the table of contents block after the article you’ve written. Wait for the blue line to appear before dropping the TOC block to its new position.
4. Customize the table of contents’ appearance.
As the table of contents is a synced block, you can’t customize each entry in it separately. But, you still can change the TOC’s text color and background color as one.
To do this, select the 6-dot handle and click “Color.” Then choose the shade for “Text Color” and “Background Color.”
After choosing the colors, you’ll immediately see the changes on your table of contents. Then you click one of the entries in the table to navigate to the section where it is linked to.

Whether you use the Notion app on an iPhone or Android phone, the steps to adding a table of contents apply to both.
Once you have opened the Notion page with your long-form content, follow the next steps:
1. Tap on a blank space on a Notion page.
This move makes the bottom taskbar appear. You’ll find this above the onscreen keyboard.
Make sure that the section titles are already formatted as heading blocks.
2. Choose the “+” icon.
You’ll find this button between the “AI” icon and “Turn Into” icons.
